What steps are museums taking to document the global pandemic, racial justice protests, and other challenges of 2020? How have those who care for collections changed the way they work? This summit will explore contemporary challenges, opportunities, and successes surrounding museums and the caring of collections.

Equitable Acquisitions: A New Paradigm for Collecting With Community
Learn how The Oakland Museum of California reimagined the collecting process to prioritize material from traditionally marginalized communities. This acquisitions approach starts with relationship-building and compensates community partners for their time and stories. Panelists will share a new infrastructure of collecting kits, interview protocols, pricing guides, and payment methods.

Collecting, Contextualizing, and Exhibiting Inclusion at the Autry Museum
This panel will explore how Autry curators are expanding community outreach, integrating collections, and connecting voices to collections and content that matter. These activities represent multiple, entwined portals between curators and communities, amplifying diverse voices while opening doors to collaboration and charting a responsive approach to diverse audiences.

How the Pandemic Helped Heal Our Database (Pre-Recorded on Tuesday, March 30th)
When California went on lockdown, Collections staff were asked to create projects that would not only work towards database clean-up, but might also be appropriate for non-Collections staff with little experience. Brief summaries of the various projects, along with the results and commentary will be provided in this session.

Moving Collections During a Global Pandemic (LIVE)
The Center for Sacramento History recently cleared approximately 600 square feet of artifact storage by maximizing shelving and relocating over 150 medium to large sized objects - all during the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn the steps taken to successfully complete the project and how unexpected challenges and safety protocols were addressed.

2020, The Year We Gave Our Collection to Guerrilla Historians (LIVE)
Recognizing isolated non-digital community members during the shutdown, the Western Neighborhoods Project (WNP) launched “Guerrilla History.” This project transformed over 50,000 geocoded online photos into printable posters and encouraged folks to pin them up in-situ around San Francisco. Hear how we did it and what we learned along the way.
